5/13/2023 0 Comments Again but better book reviewLiberally adapted from the 2016 German film “Texts for You” (“SMS für Dich”), the more-creepy-than-cute plot focuses on a grieving New York children’s book illustrator who sparks up a relationship with the complete stranger who’s inherited her dead boyfriend’s phone number. Dion, writer-director Jim Strouse’s “ Love Again” is all about such healing - to the extent that if it were a book instead of a movie, it would be filed in the self-help section. Eighteen years after “Titanic” made her a mega-star, Dion lost her husband and manager, René Angélil, and the singer has made no secret of her struggle to move on since.Īn old-school, straight-faced studio romance featuring five new songs from Ms. We’ve all heard Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On,” but if you really listen to the lyrics - “Love can touch us one time / And last for a lifetime” - the tragedy-defying hope they describe applies to more than just comely Rose learning to live without her blue-eyed cabin boy. Especially, the leading ladies, Ettia & Cherri. This may only be a short Novella, where there isn't the word count to give each person a full backstory, but you still get a very good sense of who all the characters are at their core. I adored all the characters and was very impressed with how fleshed out they all were. You feel transported to the Winter wonderland on the Santa Express train. Especially, the descriptions of the North and South Poles' magic. It has layers woven throughout that enhance the storyline & it's written beautifully. This book may be as sweet as the Ettia's Hot Chocolate, but it isn't a total puff piece. Especially as, she is quite frankly a genius, in my opinion, because the idea of Santa's daughter finding love with an Australian mechanic after the sleigh gets stranded on Bondi beach is pure gold! I haven't read any of Elle Armstrong's books before, but I will definitely be adding her other stories to my TBR list after this cute little Christmas nugget. Looking for a super sweet Christmas sapphic romance this Holiday season? Well, look no further than this adorable book. A super sweet story full of Christmas magic! 5/13/2023 0 Comments An unfinished life robert dallekKennedy 1917-1963Ĭapture and storage technique unknown Carrier category audio disc Carrier category codeĬarrier MARC source rdacarrier Configuration of playback channels unknown Content category spoken word Content type codeĬontent type MARC source rdacontent Control code ocn859411027 Dimensions 4 3/4 in. It’s a quiet, contemplative time that gives us a chance to reflect on what we’ve accomplished and what the last year has brought us. Calm piano music plays over the crackling of the fireplace channel and we start to discuss plans for the end of the year and the beginning of the next one. We’ve already put up the decorations and we enjoy them in the final week of calm before the storm of preparations truly begin. It’s my favourite time of year, because it’s the time just before the hectic commencement of the holiday season. It’s disappeared each time, but it stuck around long enough to warn us about the inevitable deeply snowed-in winter nights of crystal quiet where, if you listen hard enough, you can hear each snowflake fall to meet the ones that have collected on the ground before it. As November draws to a close, the leaves are mostly gone and there has been snow on the ground twice now. 5/12/2023 0 Comments Americana ngoziIn the discussion, Adichie brought up topics ranging from toxic masculinity, abuse, sympathy to the abusive, to body image, domestic responsibility, and especially feminism. She most recently gained mainstream notoriety after her speech titled “We Should All Be Feminists” became one of the most-watched TEDtalks and even was featured as a sound byte in Beyonce’s song “Flawless”. It was followed by two other books, Half a Yellow Sun and Americana. When Adichie finally came out on stage after a standing ovation, she asked for “all her Nigerians” to raise their hand, and dozens from the audience did so with cheers.Īdichie’s Purple Hibiscus, a story about a young Nigerian girl in an abusive home, was published in 2003 and quickly became a New York Time’s Bestseller. I’m so excited,” said Jennifer Nicholson, a volunteer from the Gaithersburg Book Festival. Many in the audience were excited to see her. People poured in from all around the state to hear Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie discuss her Bestselling book, Purple Hibiscus, at the One Maryland One Book event at Gaithersburg High School on Sept. 5/12/2023 0 Comments Florida by Lauren GroffBefore I started reading, I wrote in my notes: “To me, Florida says weird, sweaty, and hazy.” While I could have done with a bit more weirdness, overall these stories delivered. I had a feeling I’d like this book (why else would I pick it up?), but I was surprised by just how much I enjoyed it. This notorious state is just the right location for talks of existential dread and climate doom-after all, Florida is being affected by climate change much more severely and noticeably than some other parts of the U.S. Swamps and humidity and sinkholes abound. Groff’s sentences do all the work for your imagination-they are simple, yet they manage to conjure up the most vivid scenes.Įvery Florida creature is present here: snakes (lots of snakes), alligators, panthers, and mosquitoes. The imagery in each story is exacting, almost overwhelming in its specificity. The aura of Florida seems the perfect setting for Groff’s writing-it is distant, hazy, surprising, and at times suffocating. There is an atmosphere of hopelessness, or, rather, a futile hopefulness. 5/12/2023 0 Comments Catherynne valente space operaUnfortunately, just about everyone on their shortlist is dead-except for the two surviving members of washed-up glam rock band Decibel Jones and the Absolute Zeros. Now it’s Earth’s turn to prove its sentience, with a band personally selected by the galactic alliance known as the Great Octave. Only if a species was judged capable of baring its inner soul musically-that is, if a jury ranked it second-to-last or higher in the Megalactic Grand Prix-would it be permitted to continue existing. This nearly literal title about an intergalactic battle of the bands is perhaps operatic in scope (in a comic vein, at least) but is more rock than opera.Īfter a devastating interstellar war in which various alien species fought for the right to be considered sentient by all the other species, peace was declared, and everyone agreed on the best way to determine sentience: a song contest. |
